Online event explores the history of national and local Dumfries & Galloway Apples

Where do our Apples come from? Why does Dumfries & Galloway Have such a high proportion of ‘pure’ crab apples? What can we do to protect this? These questions will be explored in a fun and informative online event at 7.30pm on 28th January.

The event is fortunate to include a presentation from Markus Ruhsam from Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh on the national origin of Apples, leading to the picture locally in Dumfries & Galloway. Local Crab Apple enthusiast Jools Cox will then give a local perspective on work over the last 12 months to gather 110 samples of crab apple (Malus sylvestris – the only apple ‘native’ to the UK) from across Dumfries & Galloway, with them being sent to Markus for DNA-testing to measure their ‘pure’ness. 80% of the trees tested were found to be pure, confirming Dumfries & Galloway as a hotspot for Crab Apple purity.

The event will include time for attendees to put their questions to Markus and Jools on what this means and what is next.

The event will be hosted by Dumfries & Galloway Woodlands, a new organisation aiming to support trees, habitats and the people that depend upon them in our region. McNabb Laurie, Dumfries & Galloway Woodlands Manager said:

“This event is going to give a national and local perspective to apples, particularly our ‘pure’ crab apples. Work in the last year by citizen scientists across our region has confirmed Dumfries & Galloway as a hotspot for ‘pure’ crab apples and we can consider why that might be.
All are welcome to join us at this fun and engaging event on Tuesday night – book your free ticket and you might never look at an apple in the same way again…”
