Forthcoming Women’s World Championship Ice Hockey set to be Truly Global
The forthcoming Women’s World Championship Ice Hockey tournament, to be held at Dumfries Ice Bowl from March 30 to April 5, will be a truly global event.
The Great Britain Women’s team will compete against top seeds Kazakhstan, plus Korea, Poland, New Zealand and Croatia to try and earn promotion from the International Ice Hockey Federation’s Division 2A. The team will play all their fixtures at 8pm during the week-long event, which should encourage Great Britain supporters to turn out in force to get behind the host nation.
Councillor Colin Smyth, the Council’s Events Champion said;
“Dumfries and Galloway is better connected than ever before, due to a range of projects that the Council and its partners funded through our 2014 Legacy Plan. It is great that teams from as far afield as New Zealand, Korea and Kazakhstan are making their final preparations to come to Dumfries to take part in a World Championship tournament here.
The Council invested in the regional Major Festivals and Events Strategy as a core element of our Legacy 2014 planning, the only Strategy of its kind in Scotland, and we continue to see many sporting, cultural and economic benefits from our targeted investment to superb projects such as World Championship ice hockey.”
Legacy Week runs from 9-15 March and celebrates a year into Legacy of Glasgow 2014, The Ryder Cup and Homecoming. As part of Legacy Week, Dumfries and Galloway Council will be celebrating local successes in each of the 4 themes of the 2014 Legacy Plan for Dumfries and Galloway. One of these themes is Connected, and the various Ice Sports world class events our region has held and continues to hold demonstrates wonderful sporting and economic legacies related to Dumfries and Galloway’s inter-connectedness.
The three previous Ice Hockey World Championships brought national teams from as far apart as Japan and Kazakhstan to Dumfries, and the awe-inspiring first ever visit to Scotland of the sport’s holy grail – The Stanley Cup, which was displayed at the Ice Bowl in December 2013. These three previous tournaments collectively contributed more than half a million pounds to the regional economy.
Tickets for the Women’s World Championship tournament are now on sale and range from just £4 for a single match ticket to £25 for the full week Championship Pass. There are generous discounts available for group discounts and all Under 16s go free with ticket purchasing adults.
