HNC Early Education and Childcare Learners took part in a ‘Forest Schools’ day recently Near Auchencairn, Castle Douglas.
Although the weather was frosty; the sun came out briefly and the learners planned activities that kept everyone warm.
The event was linked to the HNC curriculum and assessment and working in Early Education units. The learners planned activities that they carried out in groups. Making links to Curriculum For Excellence documents which covered a variety of age ranges.
The activities included; a forest orchestra – (inspired by their recent Star Catchers workshop), an interesting and informative activity on finding and observing mini beasts and team building exercises.
The fire was kept lit throughout the day and the groups enjoyed soup, followed by toasted marshmallows which were all cooked outside on the campfire.
The event was a great educational experience that the learners can implement and expand on future careers in Childcare. It was also a great learning opportunity for team building and problem solving.
The learners really enjoyed the day and are hoping to hold another forest event in the summer. One learner commented “It was a food learning experience and a great opportunity to work alongside fellow classmates.”
