Capital Project – Spring Fling Brings 21 Artists and Makers to Edinburgh
Fine Art Society and Scotland’s premier visual art and craft open studio event showcase Dumfries and Galloway’s finest
Twenty one of the finest artists and makers from Dumfries and Galloway will feature in an exhibition opening in Edinburgh this week.
The Spring Show Dundas Street Gallery exhibition will take place at The Dundas Street Gallery, Edinburgh, from 10-25 April. It is organised by Dumfries and Galloway-based Spring Fling – Scotland’s premier open studios contemporary visual art and craft open studios event – in partnership with the Fine Art Society Edinburgh.
There will be a special preview which is free for the public to attend on Thursday, 9 April from 6pm to 8pm.
Among those taking part are former Glasgow School of Art head of ceramics Archie McCall, Harry Potter book cover illustrator Clare Melinsky and world-class cabinet maker Daniel Lacey.

“Spring Fling has a far-reaching reputation for excellence. This is reflected by the fact that we are holding simultaneous exhibitions in Edinburgh and Berlin – two major European centres of the arts – and also by our partnership with the Fine Art Society Edinburgh.
“The 21 Dundas Street exhibition features a superb mix of visual artists and makers who are emerging, who represent a wide range of established and emerging talent. We really hope this event will shine even more of a light on the immense creativity of Dumfries and Galloway.”
The full Spring Show Dundas Street Gallery is:
1. Archie McCall the former Glasgow School of Art head of ceramics.
2. Ceri Allen, a painter renowned for her depictions of urban environments.
3. Clare Melinsky, an accomplished illustrator who created the covers for the Harry Potter books and many more.
4. Colin Blanchard, original print maker who often incorporates lines of poetry with his detailed depictions of wildlife.
5. Daniel Lacey, a furniture maker who has been named as one of the 10 best up and coming cabinet makers on Earth.
6. Davy Brown a painter who creates vivid and colourful landscapes.
7. Eric Pye a photographer with an astonishing eye for natural form and colour.
8. Jennie Ashmore who uses leaves and petals to create delicate and complex patterns reminiscent of embroidery.
9. Joanne Garner an Edinburgh-based jeweller with strong links to Dumfries and Galloway whose work is contemporary, stylish and edgy.
10. John Threlfall a painter whose observations of the natural world are often inspired by the beauties of the Solway coast.
11. Laura Hudson Mackay whose photographs, many taken as she travels by camper van across Europe and North Africa, capture a sense of otherworldliness.
12. Laurie Campbell a creator of powerful photographs which reflect every human emotion from anger to serenity.
13. Leo Blamire an award-winning visual artist with a love of bright blocks of colour, pattern and design.
14. Roger Lever, vet turned photographer, whose pictures always capture the uniqueness of his subjects – animal or human.
15. Steven Burnie a painter whose work is inspired by the land and seascapes of Dumfries and Galloway.
16. Terri Campbell one of the rapidly emerging young generation of jewellers, her work develops from the organic forms of the Scottish countryside.
17. Urpu Sellar – ceramics and small sculptures with a tremendous sense of fun.
18. Victor Henderson, a watercolourist with a high, bright and discordant palette.
19. Wendy Kershaw who uses porcelain to tell stories or illustrate lines from poetry, including Tennyson.
20. Anthea Summers a potter with a love of large, rotund forms and vibrant colours.
21. Kate Knott whose figurative paintings are all backed by curious narratives whose work is full of fascinating faces and curious creatures.
Most of the exhibitors live and work in Dumfries and Galloway, which is one of Scotland’s most sparsely populated and rural areas, while others have strong connections to the region.
