Joan McAlpine MSP sponsored the “Freedom Square” event – a play written by acclaimed playwright Des Dillon and developed and performed by the young cast of Ryan Youth Theatre. Set up two years ago by the Wigtown Festival Company, the theatre has built up the confidence of its young members, many of whom are now considering a career in the performing arts.

Catering students from the Stranraer Campus of Dumfries and Galloway College ( main Photo) also showcased their culinary skills, taking over the Parliament Restaurant for the evening, with MSPs from all over Scotland keen to sample their lamb and Ecclefechan tarts.

Ms McAlpine said it was great to see the strong catering department from the College taking advantage of Dumfries and Galloway’s natural larder – which will be celebrated later in the week when she leads a Member’s Debate on DG Food and Drink.

Commenting, the south of Scotland MSP said:

“All the MSPs I spoke with really enjoyed their evening.

“It is certainly unusual for a town the size of Stranraer to have two big events in the one evening – but it just goes to show the amount of talent coming out of the area.”
