Police Scotland Local Policing West is today launching its summer safety campaign, to highlight and raise awareness of crime over the summer months.
The launch coincides with the first full day of the school holidays in the West, and officers will be on hand to provide safety advice on a range of different crime prevention themes.
To mark the launch of the campaign there will be a significant number of additional officers working in East Kilbride as part of a day of action, targeting antisocial behaviour and other areas of concern.
The campaign will run for six weeks, and over this time officers will be providing regular advice and guidance to local residents across the West around summer specific issues, including holiday safety, personal safety, road safety, antisocial behaviour and water safety.
Detective Inspector Michael Miller, of Police Scotland’s Safer Communities department, said:
“For many, the summer holidays will be a time for relaxation and rest, with this weekend set to be one of the busiest of the year at airports and on the roads as people head off into sunnier climes.
“The summer holidays are no doubt a time which kids and parents alike really look forward to, and kids might find themselves spending more time online. We’d urge parents to monitor their kids’ online activity and check what they are accessing to keep them safe.
“Hopefully we’ll see some sunny weather, and with the lighter nights, people are more likely to be out and about later, perhaps having a few drinks. Please ensure if you’re out with friends you look after each other. Plan your route home, pre-book a taxi and make sure it’s from a reputable firm.
“During the summer months, we sometimes see an increase in antisocial behaviour with noisy parties and underage drinking. Officers will be monitoring and visiting licensed premises to ensure compliance with the relevant legislation. If you’re tempted to buy alcohol for people who are underage, please be aware you’re committing an offence and you’ll probably find yourself at the attention of the police. Antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated. If you’re affected, please call 101 and speak to your local community police officers.
“Crime does not take a summer holiday. There are a few types of crimes and incidents which tend to spike over the summer months, and officers across the West will be out and about spreading the word of summer safety. Each week, we’ll focus on certain themes and provide information via social media and through local media to remind residents to take care and keep safe and ultimately have a summer to remember and not one to forget.”
