This 6th year transition boys group received funding from Youthbank which is a youth-led grant giving initiative that encourages groups of young people to apply for money to put creative ideas into action. The grant helped them purchase equipment to assist them with an outdoor conservation project which is happening at Hoddom and Kinmount Estate.
The young people involved are developing a range of skills and this will help them develop knowledge and understanding of skills needed for careers such as Farming and Ranger Services.
The boys are taking part in the John Muir Accreditation Award scheme as part of their project and are supported by Simon MacRae, Community Learning and Development school Youth Worker.
The John Muir Award encourages people to connect with, enjoy, and care for wild places.
It’s an environmental award scheme for people of all backgrounds – groups, families, individuals. It’s non-competitive, inclusive and accessible.
Tom McAughtrie, Chair of the Community and Customer Services Committee, commented, “Youthbank rewarding worthwhile groups funding is always news I welcome. Dumfries and Galloway Council made a commitment to provide the best start in life for all our children and young people, so it is fantastic that Youthbank has allocated funding allowing the boys involved in this project to develop practical skills. These skills will benefit the participants beyond their school years in gaining employment in an area they are passionate about.”
