Internationally Acclaimed Saxophonist Joins Line-up Of Classical Stars For Absolute Classics Series

One of the most popular saxophonists of his generation, Huw Wiggin comes to venues across Dumfries and Galloway for Absolute Classics’ October concerts.
1 a 1 a sara 51Commonwealth Musician of the Year, First Prize and Gold Medal winner of the 2014 Royal Overseas League Annual Music Competition, Huw Wiggin is one of the most popular saxophonists of his generation.
The musician with the “liquid gold tones and enviable breath control” (The Times) has enjoyed an enviably successful 2015, where highlights have included the commissioning of a Saxophone concerto, appearances at Brighton, Newbury and Ripon festivals, a return visit to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and the release of a concerto CD.
And Absolute Classics is delighted to announce that Huw will appear at four venues across the region for the October concert series, taking in Langholm, Gatehouse of Fleet, Thornhill and Annan.
Huw premiered a new work Three Letter Word by Andy Scott and has appeared at festivals and music societies throughout the UK and in major concert halls, including the Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, the Elgar Room at the Royal Albert Hall and a performance of Milhaud’s Scaramouche at the Henley Festival.
In July 2012 Huw was invited to perform recitals and a concerto performance of Eric Coates’s Saxo Rhapsody at the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing.
Huw is professor of saxophone at the Royal Academy of Music in London and has given masterclasses at the Royal Northern College of Music and the Universities of Calgary and Lethbridge in Canada.
He is leader of the Ferio Saxophone Quartet and regularly performs with them in the UK and abroad.
The first concert takes place on Thursday, 22 October, at the Buccleuch Centre Langholm at 7.30pm.
Annan Academy Performing Arts Centre is the venue for the next concert on Friday, 23 October, at 7.30pm
Huw then moves to the Cally Palace in Gatehouse of Fleet on Saturday, 24 October at 7.30pm and will give a final concert in the afternoon in Thornhill’s Buccleuch and Queensberry Arms Hotel, at 3.30pm, on Sunday, 25 October.

He will be accompanied by Tim Abel on piano.
