WEEKLY PRIMESTOCK SALE
From the 1st January 2015 sheep from the historic flock should be retagged prior to moving to market.
These older animals will have previously received non-electronic tags if born prior to 2010. To meet the current requirements they should be double tagged, one of which must be an electronic (EID) tag.
Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited held their weekly sale of 1930 prime lambs and cast sheep on Tuesday 3rd November.
1250 prime lambs sold to average 144.31p per kg (SQQ 145.89p). All classes except mules were dearer on the week again. Lean meated export weight lambs sold well especially 41-43 kgs which were regularly 150p+ per kg. Top price per head today was for an outstanding lamb from Messrs Brough, Cotland Tinwald which sold for £75, closely followed at £74.50 for a pen of heavyweight lambs from Galtway, Kirkcudbright. Top price per kg at 176.9p was an outstanding pen of Beltex lambs from Compstonend, Twynholm.
680 cast sheep sold much dearer on the week to average £47.50, with over 80% of the sale being blackface ewes. More ewes are required each week to satisfy buyer’s requirements. Top price per head was £108 for a Beltex from Finniness. Blackfaces sold to £59 for a pen of 25 from Southmains, Sanquhar.
