SOLWAY SHARKS ‘SPEIRS’ NETS GB U20 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP CALL UP

Solway Sharks forward Duncan Speirs has been named in the Great Britain u20 squad for their forthcoming World Championship in Megeve, France next month.

Speirs has come through the Solway junior programme and made his senior debut last season to huge acclaim – a season ending with a four-goal performance in the play off semi finals.

The call-up, confirmed by GB coach Tom Watkins this week, will see Speirs and his GB colleagues take on France, Japan, Poland, Slovenia and Ukraine.

His coach at Solway, Martin Grubb, said: “I’m very proud of Duncan making the GB U20’s team. He has worked hard and is improving all the time. Everyone at the club wishes Duncan and the GB team the very best of luck.”

Speirs is joined in the squad by another Solway junior graduate – Josh Grieveson is studying in the US and playing with Middlesex Black Bears but returns to play in France. Grieveson won a gold medal with the u20 and a bronze with the u18 last season. This will be Josh’s fourth IIHF WC tournament.

The tournament runs from December 12-18 and more information can be found at www.icehockeyuk.co.uk.
