STEWARTRY 82pts CUMBERNAULD 3pts
A third visit to Greenlaw since February 2015 was probably the last thing Cumbernauld wanted at this time of the year. Wins for Stewartry 39-7 and 59-0 already this season was not the forecast of an 82-3 win after Cumbernauld had beaten the early league leaders McLaren 22-21 the previous weekend.
After the stormy wet weather it was a very playable pitch for the game to go ahead. A penalty award in the first minute saw the visitors kick for goal but it fell short and Stewartry soon attacked deep into the Cumbernauld 22 finishing of with a Danny Burton try in only four minutes. Craig Mosey easily converted the first of his eleven conversions missing only the ninth one. Five minutes later Mosey cleared a Cumbernauld attack and Jamie Farquhar was quick to take the chance to score the second try. Cumbernauld gained their three points from a penalty kick on ten minutes. Three minutes later Stewartry were back on the attack and it was prop Ian McMorran with his first try of the season. Cumbernauld made progress into the Stewartry 22 before losing a player to a yellow card reducing them to fourteen players. Wing forward John Kerr took advantage of the extra space at a line out to score the fourth and bonus point try. More sustained attacking play on the Cumbernauld line saw captain Tommy Cannon take the front rows try count to three. Craig Mosey took a break from his conversion kicking to round of the try of the match when from deep in their own half the backs inter passed up the field for Mosey to score number six. Half time 42-3 to Stewartry.
Four minutes into the second half Stewartry’s top try scorer John Muir jinked his way over at the posts for number seven and his fourteenth try of the season. Muir quickly followed this try up with his second six minutes later.
Second half replacement winger Scott Carson out sprinted the Cumbernauld defence to score wide on the right.
New first team squad player David Maxwell also on as a replacement showed good strength as he drove for the line setting up Rory Porteous for the tenth. It was Maxwell again with Danny Boyd breaking to give fullback John Fingland his third try in three weeks. The twelfth and final try came right at the end when Danny Burton who started the rout scored his second again from a Boyd assist to leave Stewartry clear leaders of BT West Division Two.
This week its the local derby day in Division Two with Stewartry hoping to avenge their only league defeat when unbeaten Annan are the visitors to Castle Douglas with a 2.00pm kick off.
