SPRITES, FLAPPER GIRLS, FUTURE DJS AND ROCK CHICKS TO FILL THE STREETS IN DUMFRIES

First of the 2016 Burns carnival costumes are revealed

Tinsel the Big Burns Supper trainee fairy has revealed some of the spectacular costumes that have been created for January’s Burns street carnival in Dumfries.

Hundreds of costumed performers, plus floats, bands and thousands of lantern-bearers will be taking part in the event on the eve of the Bard’s birthday on Sunday, 24 January.

The 2016 theme is Musical Revolutions and the costumes will include a DJ from the future, 1950s rock ‘n’ rollers and 1920s flapper girls – there will also be a troupe of dancing ice sprites.

The carnival is a centerpiece of the nine-day Big Burns Supper festival which celebrates the best in traditional and contemporary Scottish and international culture.

Graham Main, Big Burns Supper Artistic Director, said: “The next carnival is going to be the most spectacular yet.

“The costumes are just fantastic and Tinsel, our very own trainee fairy, couldn’t wait to give people a sneak preview of some of them.

“The Musical Revolutions theme means people can look forward to some great music from lots of different eras.”

Big Burns Supper is working with 16 primary schools, all of which will be taking part in the parade, which will take place down Buccleuch Street and along White Sands.

The costumes are being created by a team led by Carnival Co-Ordinator Cara McNaught (pictured front left in photo with five people). Next to her is Shelley Reynolds as a flapper girl.

Also seen are Ryan Smith as an ice sprite (back right), Tinsel (aka Jack Finlay in the centre at the back), and back left is Ivor Gotten [corr] as a DJ from the future.
