Annandale and Eskdale Better 4 Walking project recently celebrated their 10th year birthday. Volunteers were awarded certificates and gifts as an acknowledgement and thank you for all their time, effort and commitment in keeping this worthwhile project alive.
The Better 4 Walking walks are held in Lochmaben, Moffat, Eaglesfield and Gretna and are also led by local community groups. The walkers are led by trained walk leaders who help and encourage the walkers to develop a better health and wellbeing, increase their social activity, confidence and help make a positive difference to their lives.
Over the last 10 years 3010 walks have been conducted with 26,300 walkers attending and volunteer walk leaders have delivered 7250 hours of their time to this project.
On the day a walk was conducted around the Castle Loch in Lochmaben where 90 walkers took part, followed by a lunch and birthday cake.
Chair of Annandale and Eskdale Area Committee, Councillor Ronnie Ogilvie said “Dumfries and Galloway Council recognise the importance of this activity to all those who participate helping the health and wellbeing of inactive older adults and the commitment of the volunteers who lead the walks”.
Physical Activity Development Officer, Karen Robertson said “I would like to thank everyone for leading and taking part in the walks over the last 10 years. These walks would not be possible without the commitment and effort of the volunteers who deliver the programme.”
