Throughout April and May almost 400 Primary 3 pupils from across Nithsdale took part in a tennis skills challenge. This fun introduction to the sport was organised by Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Active Schools and Community Sport team and delivered in partnership with Dumfries Tennis Club
The skills event consisted of three progressive challenges, beginning with a simple relay where pupils balanced a ball on their racket and ending with the pupils hitting balls over the net and aiming to land their shots inside a marked area. Pupils also demonstrated their teamwork as they undertook a challenge to stand in a circle and pass the ball from racket to racket without dropping it.
The programme relied heavily on P6 and P7 pupils who assisted with the scoring as part of a leadership scheme which is running in many of the Primary Schools.
The eight highest scoring teams were then invited to a festival at Dumfries Tennis Club, Nunholm, where they participated in a tennis skills festival delivered by the club’s junior tennis coaches alongside Active Schools coaches.
Councillor Tom McAughtrie, Chair of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Communities Committee said: “Congratulations to all who helped organise this event. The sheer scale of this event, with so many pupils taking part is fantastic and it was great to see the older ones helping to run things smoothly for the younger ones. Who knows, this may have encouraged some of the pupils to take up tennis on a more serious level and we may have a future champion in our midst!”
