Stewartry Under 15’s Win the Cup at Cumnock 10 a side Tournament

Stewartry Under 15’s last games of the season at Cumnock 10 a side saw the team unbeaten and win the cup, their second trophy of the season. A nice wee end to a long season full of cancelled games due to weather problems over the winter.

A great way to end a long hard and frustrating at times season.  The tournament at Cumnock was played in blistering heat and despite not having played the shortened game the Blacks took to it like ducks to water, and started as they finished at full pace and showed much better fitness than the other teams.  Handling was excellent throughout the tournament for Stewartry as was rucking and tackling.  In the end none of the other teams could live with it.  The eventual runners up Cumnock Blacks drew with Stewartry in their pool match but could not handle the Stewartry pace in the final and succumbed by 5 tries to 1.

Best for Stewartry on the day is a very hard question to answer as everyone in the squad played their part, be it running, tackling, passing, rucking, covering and positional play, however newcomer for the season Tom Allan keeps going from strength to strength,  Archie Holman showed much better fitness and ran in 6 tries,  Captain Joe Strain commanded the field and William (Winkie) Ferrie punched great holes in the opposition defence.  Well done to Fraser Forsyth & Finlay Telfer from the Under 14 team who stepped up to the mark and both had great games.

Finally, well done to all the squad (on the day and those and not present) for the whole season who showed great commitment at training despite having many games postponed due to the bad winter weather.  Many thanks to head coach Andy Milligan and his assistants, also Liz Budde and her catering team and John Muir the club DO.  Two trophies, and more than a few scalps from some top teams…notably Melrose, Greenock and Ballina.  Time for a well earned break over the summer, but fitness levels need to be kept up if the team want to take the Under 16’s season 2016-2017 to another level as they easily can with hard work and determination.  Fun tag rugby will start soon at Lochside Park in Castle Douglas on Wednesday nights.  Check Facebook & DGWGO for times and dates.
