David Mundell Welcomes Fall in Unemployment in his Constituency

Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale MP David Mundell has welcomed figures showing that unemployment in his constituency has fallen by 55% since the Conservatives came to power in 2010.

Those claiming Jobseekers Allowance or the new Universal Credit has fallen from 1,491 in May 2010 to 677 in the latest figures which represents a fall of 816 people claiming the out of work benefits over the last six years.

The number of 18-24 year olds claiming out of work benefits has also dropped from 430 in May 2010 to 125 in May 2016 which represents 2.1% of the working population across the constituency, which Mr Mundell has represented since 2005.

Commenting David Mundell MP said: “These figures are hugely welcome for individuals, businesses and families across my constituency of Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale.

“The Government is committed to our long-term economic plan which is delivering the security of a paypacket to a record number of families across the country.

“That plan is delivering more and more opportunities for employment across my constituency which will always be of the highest priority for me.

“These figures are very welcome but there is never any room for complacency when it comes to reducing unemployment and that’s why the Government will continue with their current economic plan.”
