With another summer approaching, The Whitehouse Gallery turns its attention to its most popular exhibition of the year. The Summer Exhibition opens on 2nd July, and runs through until 3rd September.
The exhibition Preview Opening will be on Saturday 2nd July, with doors open from 11am. All are welcome to attend, and enjoy a complementary glass of bubbly and some handmade chocolates.
This annual exhibition is a wonderful mix of gallery favourites, alongside some of Scotland’s most celebrated fine artists, whilst introducing some new artists to the gallery. This year guarantees not to disappoint, with some really exciting artists and a varied mix of subject matter and style, now spread over two floors. Fine Artists include Rosanne Barr, Jane Blair, Ruth Brownlee, Michelle Campbell, Dronma, Marion Drummond, John Halliday, Stewart Lammie, Moy Mackay, Fiona Millar, Louise O’Hara, Deborah Phillips, Tracy Rees & Sian Smith.
We are delighted to have some work by local artist John Halliday. Since his early exhibiting days in Scotland in the 1970s Halliday has built up a loyal and discerning following, and his work has been exhibited in major British and European cities.
We also welcome back renowned Scottish Artist Marion Drummond to the gallery, who is well known for her still life and figurative work, with a skill for capturing light beautifully in her oil paintings. Figurative work will also be exhibited by new artist Sian Smith, a recent Fine Art graduate from Duncan of Jordanstone. Smith’s practice centres around the main theme of intimacy, her aim is to create artwork in a variety of media which reflect this. It is her hope to portray the vulnerability, fragility and beauty of the figure through paint.
There will be a good selection of land and seascapes from regular exhibitors Rosanne Barr and Dronma. Barr is an award winning artist, who has established herself as one of Scotlands’ most successful landscape painters,and is one of our most popular artists. Dronma’s paintings have gained her a fine reputation amongst discerning buyers of contemporary Scottish Art, as a “New Scottish Colourist”. Her expressive landscapes may be wild and windswept, but they also gleam with an inner light.
Dramatic seascapes will also be on show by Shetland based painter Ruth Brownlee, whose work is based on responses to the rugged dramatic environment of where she lives, and the visual drama of constantly changing elements against the coastal landscape and the North Sea. A multi-award winning artist, Brownlee now exhibits in leading galleries throughout the UK.
Local artist Jane Blair will be delivering some new work for the exhibition, including wildlife and landscapes. Blair is inspired by the ever shifting light, those fleeting glimpses of change that make the every day remarkable, the colours and moods of the landscape and the beasts which inhabit it. Fiona Millar will also be exhibiting a collection of her still life and landscapes often featuring belted galloways, whilst Stewart Lammie will be exhibiting some of his popular oil paintings capturing local scenes.
Deborah Phillips will be providing some of her extremely popular acrylic landscapes to the mix,which are alive with colour and texture. Mixed Media work will also be on show by Louise O’Hara, whose landscapes explore light, colour and texture and are full of rich layers incorporating elements of historical textiles, fabrics, buttons, paper and text.
Textiles will also be the main medium for Moy Mackay, who skilfully ‘paints’ with merino wool to create striking works of art.
Tracy Rees is also delivering a few of her charming paintings, often featuring domestic pets in homely settings, whilst Michelle Campbell will be delivering some new bird paintings.
We are very excited to be exhibiting glass by Bobbie Coleman for the first time. Coleman has developed a process of using coloured enamels and tack fusing as part of her creative process, resulting in the most wonderful 3d glass works. She is interested in experimenting with the process to get a fusion of colours and textures in her work.
We also welcome Carey Naughton of Rustique Interiors to the gallery with a selection of her wonderful furniture, which have been skilfully refabricated or handmade with recycled materials. Furniture maker Tom Cooper will also be giving us some of his turned wooden bowls, in advance of some new pieces of furniture in the Autumn.
Trevor Leat will be giving us one of his large willow sculpture for the exhibition, along with a new collection of his willow basket-ware. New ceramic sculpture will also be on show by Urpu Sellar, and a new collection of verdigris copper and found object assemblages and jewellery by Linda Lovatt.
There will be jewellery by designers Diana Greenwood & Julie Allison. We will have a collection of 3d ceramic sculptural female forms by Karen James, often voluptuous and curvaceous nudes which are humorous in an understated way. Last but by no means least, new ceramic tableware will be available from Selborne Pottery, and a new collection of decorative ceramics by Debbie Barber.
