The Devil’s Porridge Museum is commemorating the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme with a display celebrating several local men who served in the Battle. Research has been done to find out more about our local soldiers who fought and died at the Somme. Although it is difficult to trace every name, several local men will be remembered in a display by the museum, opening on July 1st 2016. The names include Private Joseph W Bowman a drummer with the 17th Battalion Highland Light Infantry, Private William Henry of the 2nd Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers and Private Robert Anderson of the KOSB.
‘The Somme was a very significant event and one which caused a terrible loss of life. It’s important now that lessons are learnt from history and that we remember those who served and died for our country. If anyone has any further information on any of the men featured in the display, or anyone who served that we have not been able to research, we would be very happy to hear from them.’ Kayleigh Scott, Museum and Learning Manager.
The museum will also be hosting a talk by Stuart Eastwood, Museum Curator at Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life, all about the Somme and in particular, the Battalions of the Border Regiment, on Thursday 14th July at 7.30pm.
