In the Western Premier League at Nunholm on Saturday, Stafforce Dumfries lost out in their home encounter with Stenhousemuir. Visitors Stenhousemuir set a total of 167 for 9 batting first, with an important seventy run fourth wicket partnership between Jappie and Shahzad contributing to the eventual total. Both scored fifties as the APD Dumfries Man of the Match, Niall Alexander, took early wickets and finished with four dismissals.
In reply Dumfries were well positioned at ninety for one but the Stenhousemuir professional Jappie came on and proceeded to take five wickets as Dumfries eventually collapsed to be 145 all out.
It was a close encounter in Western Premier Reserve League for Dumfries 2nds, Nunholm, away at Stenhousemuir. Nunholm dismissed the home side for 124 with the wickets shared amongst the bowlers after a good effort in the field. Then Nunholm finished agonisingly close chasing a rain revised target in losing by one run in the last over. Mark Irwin was the Star Refrigeration Man of the Match for Nunholm after a spirited all-round performance.
On Sunday it was the semi-final of the Western Union Cup for Dumfries at Clydesdale where the Glasgow side’s first innings was dominated by South African opener Carl Huyser. He finished on 106 not out to help post an imposing total of 201 for 6 in a match reduced to thirty overs.
Dumfries were then progressing reasonably at five an over and into the forties when the spin of Bashir was introduced. That and run pressure resulted in a six wicket spell for him and a final Dumfries total in the seventies. Chris McBride was the top wicket taker with three wickets and Tom McBride was the top scorer with 33. Clydesdale will play Ferguslie in the final this Sunday.
Also on Sunday, Dumfries Women played Stirling Ladies in a league match at Nunholm. It was an enjoyable and instructive encounter with several playing their first such match for Dumfries and thanks to players from Galloway both sides were at a full complement. Stirling batted first and scored 128 for 5 in twenty overs. Marie Douglas took two wickets and the experience of Wilkinson brought 42 runs not out. Dumfries then hit a respectable 85 for 5 in reply. Margaret Miller top scored with 39 with useful contributions added by Amanda Creedon-Bass and Sue Strachan. For those interested in trying a new sport Monday evenings from 6:30 at Nunholm is the girls’ and women’s practice night.
On Saturday, in the Western Premier League, Dumfries are away at Drumpellier and Nunholm play Langloan at home in the Western Premier Reserve League.
