Dumfries Music Conference will once again return to The Stove, 100 High Street, on 21-22 October, with a number of workshops, live music performances, an exhibition, special guests and Radio DMC over the whole weekend.
From Thursday 20th October, ‘Live in Dumfries’ – an exhibition of gig posters by local designer Neil Paterson – will be displayed in The Stove Café. Paterson has been prolific over the last 20 years, designing posters for gigs in and around the town. A curated selection of these posters will be exhibited during DMC 2016 and beyond.
The weekend of music kicks off on Friday 21st October with Radio DMC. Presenters Melissa Gunn and Deep Fried Soul will be in the Stove Café on Friday and Saturday from 12pm. There will also be various workshop, including Musicplus+ and Konchis with ‘Making a hip-hop track in Ableton’, Radio masterclass by Jim Gellatly and ‘Introduction to digital marketing’ from New Found Sound’s Derick Mackinnon.
On Friday night from 6.30pm, Moniaive-based musician and composer Stuart Macpherson will be performing his immersive soundscape – Flight – in Dumfries town centre. Then, at 7pm, sound artist and filmmaker, Mark Lyken, will present his latest work, ‘Oscillion Response’ – an interpretation of the forefather of Electronic Art, Ben F. Laposky. Lyken merges his sonic responses and visualisations and Laposky’s original 1950’s Oscillion artworks to create this unique piece.
The evening will conclude in conversation with Brian Cannon at 8.30pm. Brian Cannon is a British graphic designer, art director and music video director, who is best known for his Microdot graphic design company and its work in the 1990s. Cannon has created many iconic covers, including Oasis’ debut album Definitely Maybe and The Verve’s Urban Hymns.
On Saturday night, there will be live music performances from local performer Zoe Bestel – an award winning 19-year-old nu-folk singer, songwriter and musician. Joining Zoe on the bill will be Edinburgh based tropical-pop band, Indigo Velvet and Dumfries rockers Brat and the Bonemen. DMC Live Showcase will take place in The Stove Café from 7pm until late.
