Major Events Success Story Set To Continue

Dumfries and Galloway’s status as a great location for festivals and events is set to continue.

Dumfries and Galloway Council, today, Monday 31 October, launched the Major Events Strategic Fund for events projects for financial year 2017/18.

The presence of this Fund is a huge contributing factor to the success of most of the region’s stand out events such as the Wigtown Book Festival, Spring Fling, the Arts Festival, the Tour of Britain and outdoor music festivals the Eden Festival and Electric Fields. Many other great events projects have received financial support since the Fund was launched in 2014.

The Council funds and leads Dumfries and Galloway’s Major Festivals and Events Strategy with a multi-agency partnership that includes VisitScotland and the Chamber of Commerce, aligning to the national events strategy, Scotland The Perfect Stage.

Councillor Colin Smyth, the Council’s Events Champion said;

“The Council is committed to the sustainable growth of an exciting, dynamic portfolio of brilliant major events. We are achieving this and building such a portfolio of nationally significant festivals and events. As a Council we are determined that we get the balance right between funding our existing major events and ensuring that well planned, visitor friendly new events projects receive funding. The Major Events Strategic Fund will contribute to this aim and be a major boost for regional tourism.”

Alex Roberts of Electric Fields said;

“We have always enjoyed working closely with D and G Council with the Major Events Strategic Fund. The funding we have been awarded has been fundamental towards the planning and development of Electric Fields. I would strongly encourage other event organisations to apply for Major Events Strategic Funding.

The application is straightforward and there is plenty of support should you need it.”

Kirsty Riddick of the Galloway Hills Rally commented;

“We have used our Major Events funding to encourage entries to the Rally from Irish competitors, and this approach has really worked. We have increased Rally revenues and competitor numbers and brought more money into the Stewartry economy which is obviously welcome. Our event is going from strength to strength and we enjoy a positive relationship with the Council.”

The Major Events Strategic Fund is open for applications between 31 October and 9 December 2016.

Organisations that wish to apply can request an application form from [email protected].
