STORE AND OTM CATTLE
BREEDING SHEEP
Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited held their first store sale of the year on Monday 16 January 2017 when they sold 64 Store and OTM cattle and 185 breeding sheep.
A small offering of store cattle met a strong demand with numbers falling short of buyers requirements. Topping the sale at £1000 was a pen of Limousin cross bullocks from Messrs Welsh, Lochurr. This was followed at £930 for Salers Bullocks from the same home. Top price per kg in the bullock section was 236.4p paid to I & A Burgess, Maryfield for a pen of Simmentals. Heifers topped at £900 for Salers crosses from Falbae and 231.4p for Blonde crosses from Maryfield. Bullocks averages 214.6p whilst heifers levelled at 204p.
OTM Cattle were also in big demand and despite a plainer show being forward prices were well up on the last sale. Topping at £1057.50 was a Simmental cow from Graplin Farms. Graplin were also top price per kg at 131p for another Simmental cross cow. Bulls sold to 108p for a Simmental of Wellhill. Overall average was 106.2p
A feature of the sale was the dispersal of Scotch Mule In Lamb Ewes from W McTaggart & Co, Kilquhanity. Scanned in lamb to a Texel they topped at £140 for Gimmers and £128 for ewes to average £115.63.

WEEKLY PRIMESTOCK SALE
Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited on Tuesday 17th January 2017 had forward 1547 Prime hoggs and 218 cast sheep.
1547 prime hoggs averaged 166.21 (SQQ 167.97). Again lean meated export weight 38 – 42kgs were a sound trade regularly 180p plus. Overfit and hoggs weighing 45kg were extremely hard to sell but heavyweight hoggs 45kg plus were a good 10p dearer on the week.
Topping the hoggs were outstanding Beltex hoggs at £85 and 212.5 ppk from Messrs Kerr, Midtown, Castle Douglas and to £85 for Texels from Messrs Williamson, Breckoniehill, Castle Douglas.
218 Cast sheep forward were again a subdued trade as has been seen around the country topping at £80 for Texels from Castlehill.
