This year St. Joseph’s College School will be presenting their annual show, ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, at The Theatre Royal in Dumfries for an ambitious four night run!
‘Little Shop of Horrors’ is a horror, comedy, rock musical set in a florist shop in the run-down town of Skid Row. It follows the story of Seymour Krelborn, a poor orphan, who works at Mushnik’s Skid Row Florists that is owned by the cranky Mr. Mushnik who treats Seymour poorly.
His co-worker at the florist is the beautiful Audrey who has a unique fashion sense which some may consider to be tacky. The florist is not doing well and Mr. Mushnik debates shutting down the shop until Seymour reveals that during a sudden eclipse of the sun, he discovered a mysterious plant which resembles a large Venus Flytrap. Seymour is secretly in love with his co-worker, Audrey, and names the plant Audrey 2 in her honour. Hoping that the Audrey 2 will encourage business, Seymour places the plant in the shop window yet, the plant fails to thrive in it’s new environment.
One day, when tending to the flowers in the shop, Seymour accidentally pricks his finger on a rose thorn which draws blood. Noticing that the Audrey 2 has opened up thirstily, Seymour reluctantly lets the plant suckle from his finger. He then realises that what the Audrey 2 needs to survive is blood but how far is he willing to go to secure the future of the business…?
Rehearsals are well underway for the cast who meet at lunchtimes and after school. Electric Theatre visited the school recently to help construct the huge final versions of the moving puppet, Audrey.
A warning has been issued to pupils not to feed the plants in the Drama Department. All the teams behind the scenes are working tirelessly on set, costume, publicity, make-up, lighting and so on… There’s much excitement building up to the performance dates on the 20th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd of June.
Tickets are on sale and available from the Midsteeple Box Office and The Theatre Royal.
We would like to thank the theatre for their support and look forward to building a fantastic partnership to continue the success of our previous shows.
