Digital start-up moves into Dumfries High Street

Red E Digital Technologies becomes first enterprise to have an office in Midsteeple Quarter-owned The Standard

A growing Dumfries digital technology start-up has moved into its first home on the High Street.

Red E is the first business to set up base in the enterprise hub at Midsteeple Quarter’s flagship development, The Standard.

The enterprise, launched about a year ago, specialises providing innovative digital connectivity solutions, working with companies across Dumfries and Galloway and beyond.

Its Red E Pay electronic payment system is growing strongly, as is its Red E SIM service, a multi-network mobile coverage platform which improves connectivity.

The firm is also in the final phase of testing its next innovation, Red E Meal, a food delivery platform which he hopes will help empower local restaurants, takeaways and shops by rivalling major national apps.

Previously operating from owner Richard Underwood’s home in Heathhall, the move into The Standard this week marks an important milestone in the evolution of the business.

Richard said: “This feels like a natural move for me. It’s really exciting.
“This is a nice office – clean, modern and with a really nice feel. It’s got everything I need.
“Being in the High Street means that I’m easily accessible for customers – and when I fancy nipping out for a coffee I’m only 30 seconds from the nearest coffee shop.
“Having an office away from my home also allows me to have a better work and homelife  balance.”

Dad-of-two Richard, whose new office has a great view over the High Street and up Great King Street, started thinking about developing his own electronic payment platform while operating his previous business, Power Bikes, in Dumfries and Whitehaven.

“I thought there were better ways of doing things than I’d experienced and one thing has led to another since,” he said.
“Customer support is a big thing for me and our key focus is on aftersales and ongoing support, being there for customers when they need us.
“I love what we’re creating with Red E. The most exciting thing for me is building this sort of thing – all of the research and development that goes into what we’re creating.”

Supporting emerging new local enterprises is a key part of Midsteeple Quarter’s mission to breathe new life into Dumfries High Street.

Richard is set to be joined by other entrepreneurs in the first-floor enterprise space in The Standard in the not too distant future.

Midsteeple Quarter Enterprise Manager Jakob Kaye said: “It’s fantastic to have Richard bring Red E to The Standard. This is an interesting, innovative and ambitious Dumfries start-up which will benefit from having a home in the heart of the High Street.
“For Midsteeple Quarter, this is another important step towards the creation of a really vibrant enterprise incubation hub where local people and businesses can network, collaborate and help boost our town’s economy.”
