The chief officer of Scotland’s Towns Partnership has praised the people power proving pivotal in shaping a new future for Stranraer.
Kimberley Guthrie visited on a fact-finding trip last week to see and hear more about the vision on strategy for the town.
Alongside representatives of Architecture and Design Scotland, they discussed local initiatives and developments alongside officials from Dumfries and Galloway Council and South of Scotland Enterprise.
Among those they heard from were Creative Stranraer, Stranraer Watersports Association, the town board and about the work taking place to revive and repurpose the derelict former George Hotel in the town centre.
Speaking afterwards, Kimberley said: “Creative placemaking has really brought the community together and propelled the town into a new version of itself. The day was a real reminder of how people make places.
“Once its transformation is complete, the George Hotel will be a brilliant addition to the town, further enhancing the arts, leisure and cultural sectors which are helping to transform the town.
“Out of all sorts of challenges, people and organisations in Stranraer are seizing opportunities to build a better future. It’s fantastic to see.”
STP is the organisation which champions Scotland’s towns and places and the pivotal part they play in the national economy. It oversees Scotland’s Improvement Districts as well as spearheading the Scotland Loves Local initiative, which encourages residents to get behind local people and businesses.
