AccessArt Turns St. Michael’s Church into a Creative Canvas with Big Blue Bunting Installation

If you’ve passed by St. Michael’s Church recently, you may have noticed a striking new feature: the Big Blue Bunting adorning the church railings.

Unveiled just in time for Doors Open Day in September, this vibrant installation will remain on display throughout the autumn season.

Featuring over 20 pieces of bunting and artwork centred around 10 captivating themes, the project is inspired by the rich history of St. Michael’s Church and its community.

The designs were created by more than 40 artists, whose works were developed in creative workshops led by Turning Point Scotland’s AccessArt. A key figure inspiring the artwork is none other than Robert Burns, one of the church’s most famous parishioners.

The Bunting Project began in July with an immersive tour of the church, where participants explored its history through photography and drawing workshops. Guided by the church’s access officer, and Dumfries Museum service, participants gathered inspiration from the church’s heritage, before the artists returned to the studio to transform their insights into striking visual art.

Steven Burnie, Senior Arts & Crafts Co-ordinator at AccessArt said,

“This artwork reflects the creativity and dedication of the AccessArt community, we pride ourselves on being inclusive and adaptable. We offer a safe, non-judgmental space where individuals—particularly those with learning disabilities and neurodivergence—can express themselves and overcome barriers to participation.”
