South Scotland MSP Emma Harper – a registered nurse and former clinical educator with over 30 years of experience working in surgery – has written to NHS Dumfries and Galloway to offer her services in their efforts to treat those affected by the current coronavirus pandemic.
As has been stated by both the Scottish and UK Government, it is highly likely that cases of coronavirus will peak in the days and weeks to come which will put a lot of stress on our NHS with an increase in the number of coronavirus cases – particularly in vulnerable groups who may require hospital treatment. The current estimates show that there may also be a staffing shortage across the NHS.
Ms Harper visited Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary this week and heard that plans and preparations are in place with assurances that the staff teams are as organised as possible to help combat coronavirus – which she has offered to help with.
Commenting, Ms Harper said:
“The outbreak of coronavirus is something which many people are rightly concerned about. I understand and sympathise with these concerns. However, it is important to be realistic and understand that this virus will present challenges to our NHS in terms of staffing, capacity and resources such including ventilators and other equipment.
“With estimates showing that there will be increased numbers of patients presenting with symptoms, along with an increase in potential staff absence, I have written to NHS D&G to offer to come and work with the board to play my part in alleviating some of this anticipated additional stress.
“The safety of the people of Scotland must be at the forefront of whatever we all do. I am therefore urging all constituents, and indeed everyone across the country, to follow the scientific advice – to avoid social contact where possible and to ensure people are following hygiene precautions.
