A spokesperson for the Catherine Street Inclusive Play Park & Community Garden told DGWGO
“We are delighted that the support from the wider community of Dumfries has resulted in this award from Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme.
We will now be able to expand the range of features in Catherine Street Park and Community Garden by installing windpipes that will allow users to enjoy a unique sensory play activity.
Thank you to all our supporters in Dumfries and to Tesco for your investment in our dream of making an inclusive and accessible park for all.
Work will now begin on bringing the project to life.
Include Us is a registered membership charity dedicated to developing and providing an inclusive and accessible park and community garden in the heart of Dumfries. We are committed to ensuring that all people, of all ages can benefit from the benefits of outdoor play, recreation and social interaction regardless of ability, needs or age.
We are redesigning and redeveloping a small pocket park by providing gates, pathways, seating, accessible play equipment (a wheelchair swing, roundabout and water play feature) outdoor classroom as well as a community and sensory garden to provide an inclusive green space that will welcome all members of the community
We want to ensure that everyone will have access to and be welcome to a range of events, experiences and opportunities to interact with nature and with others and to break down social barriers and divisions.
Voting ran in stores throughout March and April with customers choosing which local project they would like to get the top award using a token given to them at the checkout. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups each time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions are awarded funding”.
Tony McElroy, Tesco’s Head of Communications in Scotland, said:
“Bags of Help contributes funds to community projects up and down the country and we’ve been overwhelmed by the response from customers voting in their local stores. We look forward to seeing even more projects come to life.”
Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities. Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online.
Since launching in 2015, Bags of Help has provided more than £9.5 million to over 3,200 local community projects across Scotland.
