Joe Sets Eyes On Brighton Marathon After Life Threatening Diabetes Episode

Joe McGurk, a 29-year-old man raised in Dumfries and Galloway, has set his sights on a remarkable feat – participating in the 2025 Brighton Marathon.

Joe’s personal journey with diabetes began only 80 days ago with a life-threatening episode of diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious complication of diabetes that occurs when the body produces high levels of blood acids called ketones.  Joe was subsequently diagnosed with a rare type of diabetes that only affects a small percentage of individuals with the condition.  Despite the challenges he is facing, Joe remains determined to take control of his health and set his sights on a new goal – completing the Brighton Marathon in April 2025.

His determination to overcome these challenges serves as an inspiration to many and highlights the urgent need for funding for research and education on this often very misunderstood condition.

In the UK, diabetes is a growing health concern, with recent statistics from Diabetes UK showing that there are currently 4.9 million people living with diabetes, and an estimated 1 million more undiagnosed cases.  This means that nearly 1 in 15 people in the UK are affected by diabetes, making it one of the most prevalent health conditions in the country.

Through his training and preparation for the marathon, Joe hopes to raise awareness about diabetes and the importance of early detection and management of the condition.  He believes that there is a significant misunderstanding of diabetes in society, with many people unaware of the impact it can have on individuals and their families.  By sharing his story and participating in the Brighton Marathon, Joe aims to educate others about the realities of living with diabetes and inspire those facing similar challenges to never give up on their goals and dreams.

Funding for research and education on diabetes is crucial to improve outcomes for individuals like Joe and millions of others living with the condition. By supporting initiatives that focus on prevention, treatment, and management of diabetes, we can work towards a future where everyone has access to the resources and support they need to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.

As Joe McGurk prepares to take on the 2025 Brighton Marathon, he invites others to join him in raising awareness and funds for diabetes research.  He says that together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by diabetes and work towards a brighter and healthier future for all.
