Make a Lantern for Dumfries Carnival

Children and grown-ups are invited to take part in a series of lantern-making workshops in readiness for Dumfries Carnival.

Seven free workshops take place in Dumfries between January 6 and January 12. Each features live music, poetry, storytelling and family games such as musical bingo and a colouring competition. Some include food too.

The highlight will be making colourful and creative lanterns to feature in Dumfries Carnival’s lantern procession on January 18.

Justin Hyslop, participation director at the Big Burns Supper, which is running the workshops, said: “We are thrilled to bring the community together for these festive activities. It’s a wonderful opportunity for families to create lasting memories and be part of the Dumfries Carnival.”

The dates and times are:

  • Sunday January 5, 10am-4pm, Queen of the South Arena (register for glow in the dark football);
  • Monday January 6, 11am-3pm, Dumfries Baptist Church, Georgetown;
  • Saturday January 11, 10am-4pm, YMCA, Lochside;
  • Saturday January 11, 10am-2pm, former Debenhams (to include multicultural celebrations);
  • Sunday January 12, 10am-4pm, Lochar Inn, Locharbriggs.
  • Friday January 17, 12-8pm, Midsteeple Quarter

Big Burns Supper mascot Hamish the Haggis will make an appearance at each workshop. He is joined at the Ice Bowl by Pecky and Finn, the mascots of Dumfries Ice Bowl and Solway Sharks, and by Queen of the South’s mascot Dougie the Doonhamer at the Queen of the South Arena.

Chris Jardine, duty officer from Dumfries Ice Bowl, said: “Our mascots are excited to join forces and spread holiday cheer. We can’t wait to see the creativity and joy these events will bring.”

The Queen of the South event is run in partnership with the Queen of the South Community Trust and that at Lochside with YMCA and LIFT.

Dumfries Carnival, over the weekend of January 17 to 19, marks the start of Big Burns Supper, the UK’s largest winter fringe festival featuring cabaret, comedy, music and entertainment from January 17 to February 2.
