A celebration of Men’s Sheds across Dumfries and Galloway is coming to Moffat next month.
Shedfest D&G will help promote the local sheds, what they do and achieve, and their benefits to individual members and the community.
Representatives from Scottish Men’s Sheds Association, UK Men’s Sheds Association, the Scottish Government Community Empowerment Team, and Age Scotland will all be attending. Further guests have still to be confirmed.
The free event at Moffat Town Hall on Wednesday November 13 will also include presentations from each of the Sheds; inter-Shed competitions; suppliers stalls; and opportunities to learn more about the different Sheds.
It has been organised by Third Sector Dumfries and Galloway and the public, local authority councillors, and health professionals are all being encouraged to go along.
Men’s Sheds are similar to garden sheds – a place to pursue practical interests at leisure, to practice skills and enjoy making and mending.
The difference is that garden sheds and their activities are often solitary in nature while Men’s Sheds are the opposite. They’re about social connections and friendship building, sharing skills and knowledge, and of course a lot of laughter.
There are already a number across Dumfries and Galloway with more on the way. Dalbeattie Men’s Shed, for example, has enjoyed success in national awards, including the UK Men’s Shed Association Shed of the Year back in 2017.
A spokesman for the group said: “Both the meeting and workshop areas of the shed improve the health and wellbeing of shedders by providing a social focus and a friendly working environment where they can participate in activities of interest to them, and increase their social circle and craft skills.”
