Sports Students Helping Community Get Fit For Summer

Sport & Fitness students at Dumfries and Galloway College have been delivering a wide range of activities to the local community in recent months.

More than 300 primary school children have participated in a Curling Programme at Dumfries Ice Bowl, coached by HNC Sports Coaching students under the watchful eye of Curling Development Officer Graham Sloan.

Students have also delivered a block of coaching at Dumfries High School to the learning support unit before embarking on coaching blocks at St Andrews, Noblehill and St Teresa’s Primary Schools, with support from Dumfries & Galloway Council’s Active Schools Coordinator John Allison.

By the end of this college year, in the region of 500 local children will have been coached by college students.

Lecturer Kevin Somerville said: “Working in partnership with local organisations to give our learners industry experience is a key part of our Sport & Fitness courses at the college.
“It gives our students the chance to showcase their skills to the local public and employers. Beyond that, it has a significant impact upon the physical and mental health of hundreds of children in local schools.
“Our students this year have been a real credit to themselves and the college with their enthusiasm and professionalism.”
HNC Sports Coaching & Development student Jack Wright said: “The different coaching experiences we have had this year have been really enjoyable and have improved my confidence.”
Dumfries and Galloway College Principal Joanna Campbell said: “We are delighted to see our Sport & Fitness students go out into the community to deliver these exciting activities.
“It is a benefit to the local children as well as the learners and will hopefully have a positive impact on everyone involved.”
