A Stranraer care worker has been recognised for working in the sector for more than 20 years.
Alan Berry, a Visiting Officer at Wheatley Daar Lodge service in Kirkcudbright, joined more than 60 Wheatley staff at a special event in Glasgow celebrating the life-changing difference their support has had on the lives of others.
Daar Lodge is a sheltered housing complex in the town and provides care and support services to tenants.
Alan, who lives in Dunragit, near Stranraer, said: “Working in care and seeing the difference that you’re able to make to people’s lives is really rewarding.
“There is a lot of satisfaction in supporting someone from the beginning of whatever issue they are facing through to the end. Knowing that you’ve helped someone achieve something and knowing the support you’ve provided has made a difference.
“The best skill you can have working in care is empathy. Put yourself in their shoes, think about the people you’re working with and listen.”
In 2023, Alan was crowned ‘Social Care Worker of the Year’ at the Scottish Social Services Awards (SSSA) held in Glasgow.
Louise Dunlop, Managing Director of Wheatley Care, said: “It was an honour to recognise Alan and all the other members of staff and say a big thank you for all their efforts.
“Their hard work over the years has made a life-changing difference to the lives of thousands of people across Scotland and they should be incredibly proud. The time this group has spent working in care is testament to their commitment over many years to supporting vulnerable people in society.
“Working in care is an incredibly rewarding sector and can really make a huge difference to the lives of people. At Wheatley, we are always on the lookout for caring people to join our team. If this is something you are interested in finding out more about, get in touch.”
Wheatley Care, along with Wheatley Homes South – Dumfries and Galloway’s largest social landlord – is part of Wheatley Group, Scotland’s leading housing, care and property-management group.
