On 11th March, a group of local residents and green-fingered volunteers planted 20 new trees along the Kingholm Quay Cycle Path in Dumfries. The trees – 10 Oak and 10 Alder – were chosen to complement trees already along the route and to start the next generation of tree cover.
The trees, stakes and guards were funded using a grant through the South of Scotland Tree Planting Grant Scheme. This Scheme has supported more than 90 small scale tree planting projects across the region this planting season.
The planting day was supported by Dumfries & Galloway Council’s Estates team and the Dumfries & Galloway Woodlands Initiative.
Local resident Sarah Zillwood was the driving force of the project, saying:
“It was fantastic to receive a grant and work with a lovely group of people to plant new trees along a section of the Kingholm Quay path. Hopefully these young trees will help with carbon capture, biodiversity and make the river bank a much more beautiful place to walk as they thrive and mature.”
McNabb Laurie, Dumfries & Galloway Woodlands Manager, added:
“Many thanks to the folk that joined us for the planting and to the support from Dumfries & Galloway Council. This is one of more than 90 tree planting grant awards made across the region in recent months and hopefully plays a small part in encouraging the next generation of trees along the route.”
The South of Scotland Tree Planting Grant Scheme supports native tree planting schemes across Dumfries and Galloway. The Scheme is funded by a range of partners, including Woodland Trust, Scottish Forestry, Dumfries & Galloway Council’s Nature Restoration Funding and Windfarm funding.
