The Guild of Players Theatre Royal Dumfries, Scotland’s Oldest working Theatre, is looking to work with a freelancer to develop the field of heritage research and archiving within their venue and to oversee their Theatre Heritage Tours Project from March to September this year.
The Theatre Royal Dumfries, established in 1792 has links to many famous historic figures including the likes of Robert Burns, J.M. Barrie, John Laurie and a number of notable Scottish actors. The Guild of Players now seeks to extend the work on the Theatre Royal Dumfries archives to develop their Theatre Heritage Tours Project.
The project will focus on researching, archiving and developing tour materials and they are looking for someone to oversee the launch and the delivery of the tours at the Theatre covering their early years in the 18th century from the establishment of their building and audiences right up to the 20th century following the Guild of Players taking ownership of the building in 1959.
As part of this project, the Theatre will be celebrating its 230th anniversary in September 2022 with some exciting tours planned and a display being created during the World Burns Federation Conference at the beginning of their month of celebration.
The team are keen to understand more of the history of their incredible building and the people who have kept it alive for 230 years and the impact the Theatre has had on the local Dumfries community throughout history.
The role will include research, archiving of tour materials, preparation of marketing, tours merchandise and preparing the heritage theatre tour materials while working with other freelancers and volunteers during the 6 month project.
Mark Alexander, Director at the Theatre Royal Dumfries stated, “The research freelance opportunity is now live on our website and is part of an exciting project to learn more about our wonderful building, we can’t wait to see what the researcher will discover during the course of the project and we look forward to sharing the new heritage tours with our community and getting more people from our local community involved later this year.”
