ON THE HOOF – FRED THE HORSE AND FRIENDS HELP LAUNCH SPRING FLING 2014

There’s a Spectacular Bank Holiday weekend celebration ahead of visual art and craft all across Dumfries and Galloway

Fred the horse has become a living artwork for Spring Fling 2014 – sporting a coat which has been turned into a colourful mural.
Spring Fling is Scotland’s premier open studios visual art and craft event – this year it takes place from 24-26 May and is the biggest ever, featuring 95 studios throughout the whole of Dumfries and Galloway.
Fred will be wearing the artwork throughout the Bank Holiday weekend as part of the Spring Fling Rural Mural project, which has seen street artists from across the UK and Europe transform everything from houses and barns to cars and old aircraft fuel tanks.

His owner, Sarah Chadfield, volunteered Fred’s jacket when Spring Fling appealed for buildings and objects to be turned into murals. The equine mural was created by D&G artist Hope London – who was also part of the team which created a mural on a disused electricity substation on the seafront in Stranraer.
Leah Black, Spring Fling Director, said: “Fred and the rest of the Rural Murals are among the big attractions at this year’s Spring Fling – people can drive round the region and see colourful artworks in unexpected places. They can even watch as a tractor is turned into a mural.
“This year’s Spring Fling is the biggest ever, and we are really looking forward to welcoming visitors from all over Scotland and the rest of the UK for a great Bank Holiday weekend of visual art, craft and fun.
“Our 95 studios offer everything from painting, drawing, original prints and photography to jewellery, textiles, ceramics and glass – it’s a really special event.”
Fred was joined by members of the Ross family who had a whole selection of gorgeous art and craft from some of the studios. These included a painting by Angela Lawrence, ceramics by Hannah McAndrew.
To see Fred and his jacket go to Middleshaw, near Dalton, Dumfriesshire. Full details of the Spring Fling Rural Mural locations and all the studios are available from the Spring Fling website at www.spring-fling.co.uk
