The 13th annual Spring Fling, Scotland’s premier open studios event, features some 94 artists and makers in every part of the region.
The event, which runs from May 23 to 25, is a showcase for everything from paintings, original prints, photography and sculpture to jewellery, cabinet making, glassware and textiles.
Last year it attracted around 13,400 visitors, more than half from outwith the region and overseas, and contributed around £1.4 million to the local economy.
Kate, who has a delightful studio at The Smithy, Tongland, near Kirkcudbright, makes mosaics with all kinds of themes – including ones featuring creatures from myth and legend all over the world.
They come in many shapes and sizes from a few centimetres across to triptychs more than a metre tall.
Kate said: “It’s lovely to welcome people to the studio and talk to them about mosaics and how they are made. It’s an ancient tradition and one that has a long history in so many parts of the world, people really seem to enjoy discovering how it’s done in the present and more about its past.”
Leah Black, Spring Fling Director, added: “We’ve had a superb start to this year’s event, with lots of visitors taking the chance to enjoy fabulous art and craft, great weather and beautiful countryside.

“Spring Fling offers them a huge variety of things to see and do – like Kate’s magical mosaics, which are so skilfully made and lovely to look at. One of the big attractions of the event is the sheer variety, as well as the quality, of what people can see.”
