Kevin Weaver Art Exhibition At The Tolbooth Kirkcudbright

‘Impressions of the Borderlands; Dumfries and Galloway and the Lake District.’ 13th April – 1st May 2016 This is Kevin Weaver’s third show in Dumfries and Galloway but the first he has exhibited paintings of Scotland. He had two shows last year, the first at Castle Douglas Art gallery in August and the second at the Tollbooth Gallery in Kirkcudbright in October. Both were extremely successful and Weaver, who was born in Falkirk and grew up in Cumbernauld till he was 10 years old, has a soft spot for his birth land.

His latest work includes a dramatic depiction of the unspectacular A75, lugworm hunting on the beaches of Dumfries and Galloway, the Wickerman and his sheep, Port Patrick harbour, Port Logan fishermen landing their catch at sunset, Hadrian’s Wall and Lake District woodland and sunrises over Ennerdale where the artist lives.

Weaver’s work uses complimentary colours to render light, power and movement of nature and the geography of the land and the weather that batters and caresses it in equal measure.

Weaver is a former photo-journalist who covered many wars and revolutions across Eastern Europe, beginning in 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall. Living and working in London he worked for many major national newspapers including The Independent, The Guardian, The Times, The Telegraph, The Express, The Mirror, The Sunday Mirror, The New Statesmen, Time Out Magazine, as well as doing radio for BBC Radio 4 and 5 Live.

He went on to cover the revolutions in Romania and Czechoslovakia and the wars in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo. While working as a photo-journalist in Sarajevo at the beginning of the war Weaver was shot and wounded in the leg and back. He also covered the genocide and its refugee exodus in Rwanda.

These experiences left him with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and one side of his work deals with those war experiences drawing on his photographs as a starting point for large oil paintings, some of which include wax and silicon to give a three-dimensional aspect to the work.

After working as a photo-journalist for 12 years on stories including war, revolution, royals, IRA bombings in London, The Troubles in N. Ireland, prostitution, homelessness, drugs, AIDS and refugees.

After working as a reporter Weaver became an English, Media and Drama teacher in London for fifteen years.

Weaver is planning to go up the west coast of Scotland beyond Skye this summer in a refitted camper van to continue his Scottish based work looking at the islands, castles, woodlands, beaches and mountains.  This will be the beginning of a complete tour of Scotland he intends to do over the coming year as part of a revisiting a place he has great affection for where he grew up.

Councillor Tom McAughtrie, Chair of Community and Customer Services Committee said: “I am delighted that Kevin is returning to the area with his third exhibition in our region and wish him well in his summer travels through Scotland. We look forward to welcoming him back to our region in the future with the results of his next project.”
The Kirkcudbright Tolbooth and Art Gallery is open Monday – Saturday 10-4, Sunday 1-4.  Admission Free
