Saturday 2nd May – Saturday 20th June 2015
The Whitehouse Gallery is paying homage to the sea, with a selection of artists offering their own interpretation of the theme. The preview opening is in Saturday 2nd May, where all are welcome to attend and enjoy complementary bubbly and chocolates.
Doors will open from 11am.
The sea is such a fascinating subject matter for so many artists. Some find great inspiration from its power and energy whilst others seek to understand their fear of this tempestuous force of nature. Two artists who manage to capture the energy of the sea in their paintings are Rosanne Barr and Caroline Hunter. Both manage to successfully depict the energy of a wild and choppy sea in contrast to the serenity of a calm and still sea, whilst Barr opts for a vibrant palette as opposed to Hunter, who prefers more natural tones.
Kevan McGinty, Valerie Sadler and Neal Greig return to the gallery with some of their seascapes. McGinty is based on the Machars Peninsula, which gives him great access to endless subject matter on this beautiful stretch of the Solway Coast. Also greatly influenced by the Solway Coast is Sadler, whose seascapes are always in great demand. Greig is happy painting the energetic ocean from his remote base in Ireland, also deeply influenced by the beauty of his natural surroundings.
James Fraser RSW’s interpretation of the theme always offers up interesting results. As well as his usual flattened still life work incorporating a nautical angle, James also delights in his boat and beach studies. There will also be a collection of boat paintings by Alison Dickson and Robert Innes, with two very differing approaches to the same subject matter.
In keeping with the theme, local artist Jane Blair has a collection of paintings which depict the sea as well life beneath the waves, each in Blair’s unmistakable style. We are also delighted to have a striking Liz Mackay still life painting in this exhibition, which takes the fish out of the ocean and onto the kitchen table.
Robert Ryan returns with some of his unique mixed media pictures, made with such materials as metals and crushed shells. Wendy Kershaw will be exhibiting some of her illustrated porcelain panels with a nautical theme, and Niki Crew will be delivering some of her extremely popular framed glass fish pictures and sculpture.
3d work will include ceramic sculpture by Helen Martino and Urpu Sellar, ceramics by Rob Sutherland, wood sculpture by Michael Lythgoe and driftwood sculpture by Shirley Vauvelle. There will also be a new jewellery collection from Dorset based designer Catherine Thomas.
Opening Times Mon-Sat 10am-5pm. Open on Sunday May 24th from midday – 5pm for Spring Fling
