Lego has reached a new peak in popularity in recent years with new films, games and of course, building sets, captivating audiences old and new. Its potential for creativity is explored in this collaborative exhibition presented at Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries with the Dumfries and Galloway Autism Awareness Project Group.
Downstairs in Gallery1, Edinburgh-based Warren Elsmore, a Lego exhibition specialist, displays a selection of his Lego Museum, together with film-based models, photographic prints of iconic film scenes and movie posters in Lego. Upstairs, you’ll find a selection of local Lego projects including pieces by Lego mini figure designer Calum Winspear, from Corsock, who has created special series of local historical characters. There will be play Lego bricks for you to have a go yourself!

Also at Gracefield Gallery 2 is the National Galleries/Tesco Bank Children’s Art Competition Exhibition. On display in this colourful show are the 53 winning entries from the 2017 Art Competition for Schools. The National Galleries Scotland work in partnership with Tesco Bank on this annual event, encouraging children all over the country, from nursery to S3, to engage with artworks from the National Galleries of Scotland collection and to be inspired to think imaginatively and creatively.
Over 7,000 children take part in the competition annually, enjoying the opportunity to get creative in the classroom and to let their imaginations and artistic flair loose. Themes included, birds, mermaid and pirates for younger children and transport, music, and looking/looking out for the older years. The standard of work was extremely high and included winners from five Dumfries and Galloway primary schools: Dunscore, Kirkgunzeon, Withorn, Dalbeattie and Loreburn (Dumfries).
The exhibition launched at Modern One, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, in Edinburgh and toured to Eastwood Park Theatre and Gallery, Giffnock before arriving here at Gracefield. Join us on Saturday 24th February 2-4pm for some refreshments.

Gracefield is open on Good Friday & Saturday, with free drop-in art and craft activities from 10am-2pm and an all-day Easter egg hunt trails and quizzes (we are closed Sunday/Monday) Last day of the exhibition is Saturday 7th April then it’s all change to the much anticipated, Textiles Triennial: Hanging by a Thread.

Gracefield is open Tuesday – Saturday 10am-5pm, exhibitions are always free admission.
