STRANRAERS RYAN YOUTH THEATRE AWARDED £8000 TO TACKLE SECTARIANISM

Ryan Youth Theatre (RYT) in Stranraer has been awarded a grant of just under £8,000 from the Scottish Government’s Tackling Sectarianism Small Grant Programme. RYT will create a theatre show exploring issues of sectarianism from their perspective.

To help them tackle this explosive topic they will work with Des Dillon to create an original script and perform their show to young people and their families in and around Stranraer in February 2015.

Des Dillon, is an internationally acclaimed writer, now living in Wigtownshire says he is “delighted to be working with RYT on a theatre piece exploring Sectarianism. I learned that Stranraer folks are great storytellers when I worked at the academy. Calling myself a social surrealist I’m hoping to bring the tone of Breaking Bad and Family Guy to this play, making it politically challenging but entertaining for the Youth Theatre and the audience.”

Des wrote and directed one of Scotland’s most successful theatre show of recent times, Singin I’m no a Billy he’s a Tim, and has won many awards here and abroad. His play Blue Hen will be performed in Antwerp in Flemish this November.
