A new £11.6 million affordable housing development in the Stewartry area is nearing completion.
The Wheatley Homes South site at Springholm will see a mix of 47 single and two-storey semi-detached homes built, with tenants are expected to move in from September.
The new homes will have low-carbon features including solar panels, energy-efficient gas heating and high levels of insulation and form part of Wheatley Homes South’s ambitious regeneration plans to meet housing demand across the region.
Ahead of completion, the new homes are now advertised on Homes4D&G, a common housing register allowing applicants to apply for housing with various social housing providers in Dumfries and Galloway.
The contractor is Ashleigh and the £11.6million project is being built with grant assistance of £7.7m from the Scottish Government.
Late last year, Wheatley Homes South, the region’s largest social housing provider, signed a milestone agreement with Dumfries and Galloway Council. The agreement, which runs until 2028, will see the two organisations work closely to build new homes and deliver better services to communities.
Alex Lamb, Managing Director of Wheatley Homes South, said: “We are excited about the completion of these new homes in Springholm.
“We know there is a huge demand for affordable homes across Dumfries and Galloway and as the region’s largest provider of social housing, we are committed to playing our part in helping meet this demand by building hundreds of new homes. It’s thanks to support from our strategic partners Dumfries and Galloway Council that we can make this a reality.
“Here in Springholm and across the region, our investment is far more than just bricks and mortar, it is about creating a better future for our customers. We are proud of the difference our work has already made and these new homes will build on that.”
The community benefits clause in all Wheatley new-build and investment contracts meant jobs and training opportunities were provided to people in the local community during the project.
It was previously revealed that the local economy in Dumfries and Galloway has been boosted by more than £40 million thanks to the massive investment programme by Wheatley Homes South since 2019.
Wheatley Homes South is part of Wheatley Group, Scotland’s leading housing, care and property management group.
Wheatley Group, which owns and manages over 93,700 homes including Wheatley Homes South’s, was recently named as the UK’s biggest builder of social housing over the past decade.
