Finlay Carson has passed on his congratulations to two Wigtownshire groups who have been awarded funding from the Big Lottery Fund.
Home Start Wigtownshire and the Stranraer Water Sports Association will receive over £200’000 from the fund, which focusses on helping people and communities most in need throughout Scotland.
The Home Start group will use the money to continue delivering three family groups in Newton Stewart, Stranraer and Sorbie – groups that complement their home visiting services. The funding will allow the group to provide these valuable services for three years and over that time the organisation will work with over 125 parents and children and support 10-15 volunteers.
Stranraer Water Sports Association were also successful with their application and they will use the funding to give people of all ages the opportunity to learn new skills through boat building and engaging in water sports in and around Loch Ryan.
After hearing the good news, Mr Carson said:
“I am delighted that these two groups have been successful in securing funding from the Big Lottery Fund for their respective projects.
“The Home Start group is a fantastic initiative and the money will be put to good use over the next three years by providing a service that will reach out to improve the wellbeing of parents and children in Wigtownshire. It is an excellent service, with users participating in activities such as arts and crafts, outdoor play, storytelling and guest speakers. I am looking forward to visiting the group in the next couple of weeks to hear more about their work.
“It is equally great news that the Stranraer Water Sports Association have been successful with their application. The funding will be used to put together an exciting project that will encourage the local community to make greater use of Loch Ryan, a fantastic natural asset, and will give local people the chance to try something different and learn new skills.
“Both projects are extremely deserving of the money they have been awarded and I wish them both well with their endeavours”.
