This year’s Adult Learners Week takes place from 23 to 29 May, and provides an ideal opportunity to celebrate the achievements of adult learners around the country and to remind those adults currently not involved that it’s never too late to learn new skills or refresh forgotten ones.
For 2016, Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Community Learning and Development Service Nithsdale will use Adult Learners Week to highlight and celebrate the success of those who have undertaken the new Adult Achievement Award. Indeed 21 adult learners from Nithsdale are amongst the very first in Scotland to celebrate gaining this award. The learners will receive their certificates in an award ceremony at North West Resource Centre, Lincluden during the Week.
In addition Community Learning and Development Service Nithsdale will raise awareness of the range of learning opportunities delivered in Dumfries and in Upper Nithsdale. These learning opportunities include literacy and numeracy for adults supported by specially trained tutors; ‘Rainbow Brush’ and other arts and crafts sessions; Gaelic for Beginners; computer courses for absolute beginners and improvers; English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL); and British Sign Language. You can pick up a brochure with more information on what’s available from North West Resource Centre or Kirkconnel Resource Base and other key service providers in these areas.
Other organisations promoting and delivering Adult Learning include Dumfries and Galloway College, SRUC Barony; The Urban Sanctuary; Nithsdale Walking Works and Learners Together.
Councillor Tom McAughtrie, Chair of Communities said: “It’s very important that people are provided with the opportunity to fulfil their potential, whatever their age. It’s precisely because so many of us maintain a desire to learn and develop as adults that our various communities continue to flourish as excellent places to live and raise families. It’s vital to have an event like Adult Learners Week to remind people of this.” |
