The team at the ‘Moat Brae Trust’ In Dumfries were overjoyed this week, when Rory Fairweather Bookshop Manager from Oxfam, Dumfries contacted them about a rare J.M Barrie first edition book from 1896 that they had been given.
Rory told DGWGO “One of our volunteers found this rather plain looking book when sorting through donations. We are given lots of hidden gems like this. It’s an 1896 First Edition of J. M. Barrie’s biography of his mother Margaret Ogilvy who clearly had a huge impact on all of his work. Dumfries has a rich cultural history and with renovation work progressing quickly at the Peter Pan Moat Brae Trust I thought they’d be interested in this rare book. I’m delighted to donate it to the trust on behalf of Oxfam Dumfries so that it stays in our community for all to enjoy”
Moat Brae Trusts ‘Creative Learning and Engagement Officer for Schools’ ‘Wendy Jones’ went along to accept the book, Wendy is a new member of the Moat Brae team and she has the perfect first name for someone who works at the place that provided inspiration behind the story of Peter Pan!
Catherine Colwell from Moat Brae Trust told DGWGO “We were so chuffed when Rory generously offered us the book, it will now be included in our collection at ‘The National Centre for Children’s Literature and Storytelling’ once it opens in ‘Moat Brae House’, Dumfries. This is the place where inspiration from when he used to play in the gardens there as a child helped J.M. Barrie to write Peter Pan”
