The recent severe weather should be a reminder that we should all take steps to be fully prepared for what winter can throw at us. Dumfries and Galloway Council and Police Scotland ask that everyone takes precautions to ensure each journey is a safe one. Being prepared for travelling in severe weather is something we all need to do and it takes only a few simple steps to give you the best chance of getting through it. Consider some of the following points and give yourself a fighting chance:
• In severe weather, whether rain, wind, ice or snow, understand that your journey could take longer than expected.
• Check the weather forecast and road conditions.
• Consider whether you actually need to travel right now, or if you can wait until the weather improves.
• Consider alternative routes.
• Consider alternative modes of transport.
• Allow extra time for your journey.
• Make sure your car is ready for a journey in poor weather.
• Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged.
• Set your car radio to receive auto travel bulletins.
• Tell someone your destination and when you expect to arrive.
• Consider fitting winter tyres to your vehicle.
You can prepare for travelling in severe weather by packing a few essential items to take with you. Your emergency kit should at least include:
• An ice scraper and de-icer
• A shovel for snow
• A torch and spare batteries
• Warm clothes, boots and a blanket
• Some food and a warm drink in a flask
• A first aid kit
• Battery jump leads
• A map for any unplanned diversions
Pedestrians and cyclists are not exempt either from taking a few precautions:
• Make sure you wear reflective or bright coloured clothing so that other road users can see you
• Dress for the weather and wear shoes or boots with non-slip soles
• If cycling, make sure your bike gets a regular maintenance check and that brakes work. Lights should be fitted and working
