A BID to deliver COVID-19 vaccinations as quickly as possible in the face of the Omicron variant means everyone eligible should book their booster now.
As the dangers posed by the new variant continue to be assessed, everyone aged 40 and above, unpaid Carers and those who are household contacts of people who are immune-suppressed are being urged to schedule their vaccination by visiting https://vacs.nhs.scot/csp or phoning 0800 030 8013.
The gap for everyone in the above categories between second dose and boosters has been reduced from 24 weeks to 12 weeks, so everyone in these groups who is 12 weeks from their second dose should now book their slot – irrespective of what is stated on the portal.
Director of Public Health Valerie White said: “This is a very fast-changing situation, fuelled by concerns over the potential dangers posed by the new and possibly more highly-transmissible Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
“We’ve been making really good progress with the vaccinations. The booster jag is now playing a crucial role in providing the highest level of defence.
“It’s vital that everyone eligible receives the booster, as the benefits of the first and second jags decrease over time.
“Data is showing that the booster doesn’t just help restore people’s waning immunity against the virus, but actually sees it increased to a level higher than after either the first or second jag.
“Please ensure that you book yourself in as soon as possible, and help spread the message to others – family members, friends, colleagues – so that everyone knows they will not receive a scheduled appointment: they must book in by visiting https://vacs.nhs.scot/csp or phoning 0800 030 8013.
“We’re also aware that the JCVI have recommended providing booster jags to everyone aged 18 and above.
“We are making preparations to deliver these boosters, but at the current time are asking those identified as currently eligible to book their slot – which is everyone aged 40 and above, unpaid Carers and those who are household contacts of people who are immune-suppressed who are now at least 12 weeks from their second dose.
“In addition, young people aged 16 to 17 are also now being encouraged to use the national booking system to schedule their second jags.
“We don’t know what this winter is going to bring, but we do know that being vaccinated as fully as possible will provide the best possible defence.”
