Tension, concentration and excitement were the hallmarks of the Primary School Spelling Bee held recently in Kirkcudbright Primary School.
Twenty-eight pupils, drawn from the primary schools in Auchencairn, Borgue, Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbright and Twynholm participated in the competition. A large and appreciative audience listened spellbound during the four rounds of the Spelling Bee.
For Rounds 1 and 2 all of the pupils were required to write the words given to them whereas by Rounds 3 and 4, as the numbers steadily reduced, pupils faced the daunting prospect of standing to spell words out loud. Towards the end of Round 4 two pupils remained in contention, with Lewis from Borgue Primary School being the eventual winner.
Now in its fifteenth year, the Rotary Club of Kirkcudbright continues to sponsor this event. MC for the competition, Rotarian Gavin Scott, commended all of the pupils for taking part and remarked upon the terrific efforts of teachers in promoting the Spelling Bee and in inspiring their pupils to enter.
Each of the pupils received a participation certificate from Rotary Club President, Gordon Cowan, who also presented the Winners Shield to Lewis as well as a book token.
In his closing remarks, Gavin Scott thanked all who had assisted with the arrangements which, once again, had resulted in a most rewarding and successful event.
