Jenny Craig’s 2016 Cairnsmore – Kilimanjaro fundraising challenge
This weeks DGWGO Friday focus is looking at local lass Jenny Craig and her very eco friendly charity challenge – Cairnsmore of Fleet can hardly be called a mountain, being only 770m above sea level. But if you climbed it 8 times you’d have climbed the height of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Kilimanjaro is a popular adventure for sponsored trips in aid of charity, but to get there costs a lot of money and leaves a heavy carbon footprint. Jenny has decided to do her own Cairnsmore version, since it’s right on my doorstep.
Jenny told DGWGO Friday Focus “Over 4 days (18th – 21st June) I will make 8 ascents to the summit of Cairnsmore, using routes on the north, south, east and west sides. This will be a total climb of 5,200m and a distance of about 70 miles. Mostly I’ll be on my own or accompanied by my dog, though I may have a human companion for some of the climbs. I won’t be scrambling through rainforest, camping on a volcano or dealing with malaria mosquitos and altitude sickness, but Cairnsmore can offer a few challenges of its own. The weather can be very wet even in June, and much of the terrain is very rugged and boggy with no paths – and then there are the midges!
I want to raise money for two worthwhile causes – for my own small charity Moxafrica, helping people with Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis in African countries, and for local charity St Johns West Galloway, who support a palliative care unit, supply patient transportation to hospitals around Scotland, and also support the Mountain Rescue.
I plan to keep my sponsors up to date with my progress with a daily blog about my climbs and photos of what I’ve seen along the way. If you’d like to help me to raise money, you can do it in various ways and you can choose which charity you’d like to donate to.”
