Dumfries and Galloway’s Devil’s Porridge Museum team took part in Carlisle Armed Forces Day on Saturday 29th June.
“We were really delighted to be involved and meeting the mayor was really nice” commented Judith Hewitt, Museum Manager. “We were pleased to be there to represent all the workers who helped turn the tide of World War One by working in HM Factory Gretna. We had a really positive response from the public: within minutes of setting up our stall, a lovely couple spoke with us and showed us photographs of their grandmother who had been a munitionette.”
Several of the museum’s volunteers were in attendance and spent the day handing out leaflets and interacting with the public. “There was so much interest in the museum – lots of people knew the name or had seen the signs but didn’t know the story we tell. It was nice to spread the word about ‘the porridge’ on the English side of the border and we hope to see more people venturing over it to visit us soon!” Judith said.
